The Dental Crown Process: What to Expect
Visit 1: Your Exam
During your evaluation, we will take a small X-ray of your tooth to determine the extent of damage or wear that’s present. At this time, we will discuss the best option to restore your tooth and if a dental crown may be one of your choices.
Visit 2: The Crown Prep
Our Cameron Park dentist will numb the tooth and then make adjustments to the shape of your enamel, as well as remove any damaged tooth structures. From there, we will take an impression of the tooth and use a shade guide to match color and the appropriate materials needed for your permanent crown fabrication. We’ll place a temporary crown over the tooth while your permanent one is made in our lab.
Visit 3: Crown Placement
About two weeks after your preparation appointment, the permanent crown will be ready to place. You’ll return to our office to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent one bonded in place. We’ll check the final fit and make any adjustments if needed.

Caring for Your New Dental Crown
Dental crowns are extremely durable, but they require good oral hygiene to ensure they last as long as possible. Always plan to brush around your crown twice a day, and be sure to floss around the crown daily. Flossing will not remove a permanent crown. However, not flossing a crown could allow bacteria to accumulate around the margins of your restoration, leading to recurring tooth decay, gum disease and bone loss, and crown failure. Be sure to plan a checkup and cleaning at Cameron Park Family Dentistry at least twice a year to have your dental work evaluated.
Types of Dental Crowns
Depending on which tooth is being restored, dental crown materials may vary. For example, teeth in the front of your smile that are highly visible are best treated with porcelain or ceramic crowns, which are both durable as well as aesthetically attractive. On the other hand, we might recommend a different material for an upper back tooth due to the heavy biting forces it’s exposed to each day. Temporary crowns—such as those made out of resin or stainless steel—are used between visits to protect your tooth but aren’t appropriate for long-term restorative purposes.
Our Cameron Park dentist will discuss each option with you so that you can play an active role in co-planning your smile reconstruction.
Cost of Dental Crowns in Cameron Park, CA
The fee for a dental crown can vary significantly, depending on the type of materials being used and how many crowns you need, or if a tooth requires a build-up beforehand. Additionally, factors like insurance benefits can reduce the price of your new “cap.” Depending on your situation, the average fee can range between $500 to $2000 per tooth. To ensure clear pricing on all treatments, Cameron Park Family Dentistry provides detailed treatment plans that outline all fees, estimated insurance benefits, and optional financing plans to every patient.

Frequently Asked Questions
On average, a well-maintained dental crown lasts at least 10-15 years. However, it’s not unheard of to have crowns last 20 years or more with good home care.
As your tooth’s nerve responds to the enamel being reshaped during the crown preparation phase, it’s natural to experience some heightened sensitivity. Symptoms tend to be temporary, improving in a matter of days or weeks after your permanent crown is placed. If sensitivity persists, our Cameron Park dentist may need to make adjustments to the way your crown bites against the opposing teeth.
Getting a dental crown is just as comfortable as having a routine dental filling. To ensure a gentle process, we use numbing medications that desensitize your tooth before making any adjustments. Sedation is also available upon request. Some minor soreness at the injection site or in your jaw is to be expected.
Temporary dental crowns are worn after the preparation appointment before your permanent crown is placed. These crowns may come off if you chew sticky food or floss around them. However, permanent crowns are securely fixed to your tooth and are safe to floss (but we do recommend avoiding sticky foods.) The only reason why a permanent crown may fall of is usually because of recurring decay around the tooth.
Definition of common dental crowns terminology
